In the summer of 2021, we met Duoduo for the first time. At first, my parents shook their heads, saying, “It’s too dangerous to have a dog while running a shop by the roadside.” But some bonds are destined and unstoppable.

One day in August, Duoduo was playing at the entrance when a car hit him. He lost a tooth and limped in pain. Crying softly, he hobbled toward my father, buried his head at his feet, and shed tears, as if he knew someone would protect him. From that moment, my parents’ hearts melted.
Since then, Duoduo was no longer just a stray—he became family. My parents bought him a little bed, fed him carefully, and walked him every evening. They lived simply, but gave Duoduo the best they had. Over time, he grew not only plump and clean but also well-behaved and understanding.

For four years—1,500 days—Duoduo grew alongside my parents. He was not just a pet but like their “youngest son.” He waited at the roadside for my father to return home, carried small items, helped with farm chores, and stood guard against strangers. Duoduo was their companion, guardian, and family.
Last year, Duoduo developed a tumor that constantly bled. The doctor said treatment would cost more than my parents could afford and that Duoduo had only two months to live. But my parents said just one word: “Treat.”
On the way to the city hospital, my mother held Duoduo tightly. He trembled with fear, but the moment he entered the hospital, he suddenly stopped shaking, as if he understood that we were there to save him—not abandon him.
Though the doctor gave him little time, my parents never gave up. They sought every treatment option, even giving him IV drips at home. Miraculously, Duoduo’s condition stabilized. More than a year later, he is still with us—healthy and smiling.
Perhaps Duoduo’s time with us won’t be as long as with other dogs, but that doesn’t matter. We are willing to give him the best of everything, for as long as he’s here. We only hope this love, this bond, can last a little longer… and then a little longer again.
